A superb stay, with wonderful views and matching hospitality! Highly recommended as the environment, care and ambiance are second to none. We have travelled widely and this facility ranks amongst the best.

Lucky Badgers!

Badgers’ Retreat (Stoke Gabriel Lodgings) in Stoke Gabriel deserves every plaudit it receives. It is a very special place run by two special people and several charming housekeepers. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 5 night stay in early October.

Arrival: Warmly greeted by both our hosts (David and Helen) on arrival, we were treated to a Devon cream tea in a palatial lounge; though it might also have been taken in the garden with spectacular views over Stoke Gabriel, its lovely church, and the River Dart.

Bedroom: As we discovered, each of the bedrooms is named after the village that can be seen from its balcony and what a view we had. Idyllic. The room, like the house, is beautifully appointed – luxurious bed, large bathroom, and quality fixtures and fittings throughout. Everything you might need and more – like the plentiful chocolate eclairs in a bowl on our dressing table!

Breakfast: We delighted in the friendly atmosphere at breakfast and the very personal attention of David and Helen (here and always!). There is all you could want on offer from breakfast – beautifully fresh fruit; home-made jams; local produce etc…the food and the cheery way it is served is first class. Our Hosts: As has been said in numerous reviews, nothing was too much trouble throughout, and both David and Helen seemed determined to ensure all their guests were not only relaxed and comfortable but were also able to get the very most out of their stay. Indeed, David is an apron wearing, walking Wikipedia and Sat Nav all rolled into one. Ask him a question about the locality or seek his advice on a restaurant or venue and you will not only get a comprehensive answer but a plethora of useful additional detail. The one day we had a bit of rain, he had several excellent wet weather suggestions to tie into our day.

Amazing! It is very clear that our hosts love welcoming people to their home and love their particular chocolate box part of Devon. Their priority is quite clearly to ensure that every guest feels the visit has been a treat – it certainly was for us, and we intend a return visit next year. Never mind the badgers – this is a wonderful retreat and base for one and all!

Wonderful stay at Stoke Gabriel Lodgings!

We have just had the pleasure of spending 4 nights at the wonderful Stoke Gabriel Lodgings at Badger’s Retreat. From the moment of our arrival, we were made to feel extremely welcome by our charming hosts, Helen and David.

Stoke Gabriel Lodgings is situated high above the lovely village of Stoke Gabriel, and the views of the village, and the river Dart, from the rooms at the front of the premises are simply stunning. The village itself, its beautiful quay, and its pubs and restaurants are very accessible from Stoke Gabriel Lodgings, which also provides a great base for exploring the beautiful, surrounding countryside, and its many tourist attractions.

We stayed in Room 2, a balconied room, at the front of the premises. The room was extremely well designed, very tastefully decorated, well equipped, and an absolute pleasure to stay in. Guests also have use of an extremely comfortable, and tastefully decorated lounge, and a lovely, adjoining sun lounge.

Breakfast is prepared and served by Helen and David in their lovely, open-plan kitchen and breakfast room, which has beautiful views over the village and surrounding countryside. The choice of breakfast options and the quality of the fare is exceptional, as is the wonderful, friendly atmosphere created by Helen and David. Nothing is too much trouble for Helen and David, who both added greatly to our experience of visiting this lovely part of Devon.

This was our first visit to Stoke Gabriel Lodgings, and we are currently planning our next!

Perfect stay, well deserving of its 5 stars!

This is a very special place, and David and Helen are wonderful hosts and incredibly welcoming. My room was lovely, clean with lots of space and an extremely comfy bed. Everything is thought of, including ground coffee and cafetière in the room and fresh milk in the hall. The food at breakfast was fresh and delicious with plenty of choices depending on what you fancy, and you can chat away to plan your day and get any tips you might need from David.

I was visiting alone, and didn’t have a room with a balcony so I enjoyed sitting on the patio with a cup of tea watching the sun set over the estuary. Another highlight was seeing the badgers come out of there sets around dusk.

I didn’t have a car and I found the village to have everything I needed for a couple of days. I also went on some longer walks to Tonnes, and to greenway where you can get a ferry to Dittisham (-which id highly recommend)

David and Helen even went above and beyond when my train back to London was cancelled and I needed to catch an earlier one last minute, rushing me to the station just in time!

I will be returning again for sure, my review would never do this place justice, you must go for yourself!
